Urban Plan Middeneiland IJburg, Amsterdam

Within 4 miles of downtown Amsterdam, the city pours layers of sand that become new islands in the IJ-lake, providing the dearly needed housing. Patricia Bijvoet managed the design team for one of the most recent islands: Middeneiland. In collaboration with a.o. civil engineers she developed the housing fabric, the public space, transportation, housing typology and a development strategy to provide at least 30% affordable housing, all in a setting that enhances the quality of the natural environment. Patricia completed this project while working for the City of Amsterdam.
